Plastering isn’t the glamorous trade on a job. It’s the one every other trade depends on. A bad skim shows through paint. A patchy wall catches every raking light when the lamp goes on. A ceiling that isn’t flat distracts from everything else in the room.
That’s why we take domestic plastering seriously. Every skim coat we apply is worked to a genuinely flat, hard finish. The kind a good decorator can take straight to a finish coat without prepping out lumps and hollows. Wondering whether your walls need wet plaster or drylining? Our guide on drylining vs wet plaster explains when each method makes sense.
We work across every property type Bournemouth and Dorset throw at us. Edwardian terraces in Winton, Art Deco conversions along Southbourne Grove, post-war semis in Moordown, new builds in Ferndown, clifftop apartments in West Cliff. Whatever the substrate, we assess it properly and apply the right system.
If you need walls straightened before boarding, we also offer a full drylining and plasterboarding service. And for full exterior work, our external rendering team handles sand & cement, monocouche and silicone systems.

Skim coat, or full replaster? The honest answer.
Most homeowners don’t need a full replaster. Most plasterers won’t tell you that. Here is how we decide on a survey.
A skim coat is enough when
- The existing plaster is solid (tap it: no hollow drum sound)
- The wall is reasonably flat already, just tired or cracked at the surface
- You’ve had fresh plasterboard fixed and need it skim-finished
- The decorator has flagged a rough surface, not a structural problem
Typical price range in Bournemouth and Poole: £300 to £600 a room, £3,000 to £6,000 for a full house. Two days of work for most single rooms. Dry enough to mist-coat in 3 to 7 days.
A full replaster is the right call when
- Blown plaster (hollow drum sound, lifting in patches) anywhere on the wall
- Old plaster contains damp, salts or has been historically repaired badly
- You’ve hacked back to brick or block and are starting from raw masonry
- The wall is significantly out of plumb and needs a base coat to even up
A two-coat hard wall system is base plaster (Thistle HardWall or Bonding) ruled flat, then a finish coat skimmed over it. Roughly 30 to 50% more than a skim. Allow 14 to 21 days drying before any paint touches it.

What “ready for the decorator” actually means.
A wall that looks flat from across the room but catches the raking light when the lamp goes on is a failed wall. Trowel marks, fat edges where the bead sits proud, hollows where the float didn’t reach. The decorator sees those before the paint goes on, and they cost a day of prep.
Our standard on every domestic plastering job: a wall the decorator can sand for ten minutes, mist-coat, and finish. No re-skimming the edges. No filling the hollows. We work the surface until the trowel passes are gone, the joints are invisible, and a torch shone parallel to the wall finds nothing.
On ceilings the standard is harder, because raking light from a downlight finds defects that a wall would hide. We slow down on ceilings. It is the single most common reason builders ring Pearl back rather than try a cheaper sub a second time.

Common questions
Fresh plaster typically takes 3 to 7 days to dry fully, depending on temperature, ventilation and the thickness of the coat. We recommend waiting until the plaster has turned from dark pink/grey to a uniform pale cream before painting. Using a moisture-resistant mist coat of diluted emulsion first is standard practice.
Yes. If the existing plaster is sound, clean and firmly bonded to the wall, we can skim directly over it. We'll check for any loose areas first and cut these out. If the existing plaster is blown (hollow when tapped), we'll recommend a full replaster for a durable result.
Plastering generates dust and some mess. We dust-sheet floors and protect furniture before we start, and we clean up thoroughly at the end of each day and on completion. We keep disruption down as much as possible, but we do ask customers to clear the room of items that could be damaged.
For most domestic jobs, no. We work one room at a time and the rest of the house remains usable. For larger projects where multiple rooms are affected at once, we'll discuss the programme with you in advance so you can plan around it.
Costs vary depending on the size of the area, the type of work required (skim vs full replaster), access, and any preparation needed. We provide free, itemised quotes after visiting the property, so you'll know exactly what you're paying for before we start.
